Husband and wife designers Laleh and Alessandro recently completed a top to bottom renovation of a 3-story loft located in the vibrant and artistic 4th Street neighborhood of Berkeley, California. The SOBU loft embodies the couple's unique aesthetic, honed over a decade of helming their design brand SOBU, named after their kids Sofia and Bruno.
By combining each of their specialties in architecture and design, Laleh and Alessandro have created something truly magical. The SOBU loft is designed with an emphasis on natural materials, warmth and brightness with a bit of artistic nuance thrown into the mix.
The loft is furnished with pieces designed exclusively by Laleh and Alessandro as well as one-of-a-kind creations by designers and makers showcased at the couple's Oakland showroom. Collaborations with local woodworkers and craftspeople as well as artwork from their personal collection can be seen throughout the space. Paintings by Alessandro and photography by Laleh are also on display. All aspects of this renovation were meticulously planned and executed by the couple.
Some of the features of the SOBU loft include, front and back gardens with custom built-in seating, double-height kitchen with custom acoustic wood slatted ceilings throughout, smoked oak cabinets from Denmark, roll-up door in living room leading into the garden, custom interior doors, radiant heating throughout and incredible amounts of natural light flooding all floors.
The third floor is a breathtaking final experience of the loft. An immense open space the entire length of the loft’s footprint with high ceilings, open wood rafters and clerestory set of windows. A space that can be interpreted in so many dynamic ways: A luxurious master bedroom suite; an art studio flooded with natural light year round; a spacious home office with ample space to accommodate colleagues; a dreamy workout and exercise space. The list goes on. And don’t forget to sip your morning coffee on the deck with San Francisco and Bay Bridge views.
The SOBU Loft is currently available as a location rental for photoshoots and will soon be available as a short term vacation rental.
